A small, idyllic island in the North Sea might at first sight not be the best place to start an International transport business. But in fact, it is a strong tradition for AB Texel.
During the 17th and 18th century, the island Texel was a main distribution point to bring cargo on board of the VOC ships. The VOC (Dutch East India Company) was in those days the largest commercial enterprise in the world, with a fleet of more than a hundred ships, thousands of employees, dozens of offices in Asia. That famous ‘Dutch VOC mentality’ is still in the heart and genes of the island people and in the company AB Texel. AB Texel is specialised in the transport of bulk agricultural products such as potatoes, and flour. In addition to its headquarters on the island of Texel in the North of the Netherlands, the company also has a number of branches in Europe.
The fleet of AB Texel is equipped for the transportation of products such as potatoes, carrots, peas, corn, maize, flour and compound. But it does more than simply transport these from A to B: “It’s also about inventory management, food safety and the ability to respond flexibly to the peaks associated with the agricultural season. We adjust our service seamlessly with the method and system of our customers,” says fleet manager Maarten Broekman.
With a fleet of approximately 450 trucks and 800 trailers including hoppers, tout liners, tippers and walking floors, Trailermatics is for AB Texel an important tool to get realtime insight in their activities. Maarten Broekman: “We use Trailermatics Novacom of course to see the locations of our trailers. In addition, it is very easy to create accurate geo-fencing areas. By this we know who used our trailer there; particularly useful to trace back fines! For maintenance we have an APK (Dutch road security certificate) alarm set; every trailer almost automatically goes to the garage for maintenance. That way we can keep the quality of our fleet high and have little downtime. If we receive an order, we see directly through Trailermatics which trailer is nearby state. Saves us time and mileage. We maximise our trailer park; thanks to the Idle Asset Reports, we improve our planning and are able to get an idle trailer quickly back on the road. In our job we say: standing still is losing money!”
