Telematics for Trailers:

In 2012, TruckingInfo published an article entitled “Telematics: the next Frontier”. Five years later, we have arrived at it! Frost & Sullivan in their Global Connected Truck Telematics Outlook 2017 report finds that by 2025, globally 63.5 million trucks will be connected. If you have not done so already, how can you join the trailer telematics “revolution” and how does it work?

How does Trailermatics work?

Trailermatics telematics solution for trailers is the most advanced and flexible GPS trailer tracking solution on the market. Using satellite or GPRS communication and GPS for positioning, this software developed with CLS and CNES, the French space agency, links the dashboard on your existing computer at base with robust Trailermatics modems installed in each trailer. You can track your trailers 24 hours per day across Europe and North Africa, whether on the move, idling in a layby or dropping goods off at a customer. Trailermatics is capable of sending you reports on different aspects of your trailer operations including the tracking of your trailers, fuel and tyres for maintenance purposes and the safety and security of your trailers.

Fitting a Trailermatics GPS Trailer Tracking device

On becoming a customer, you are assigned a specific member of our team to organise all aspects of installing and maintaining the Trailermatics system and respond to any questions. Trailermatics will install a Trailermatics modem on your trailers and link it to sensors that it will fix across a range of the mechanical parts of your trailers. This can be done quickly and efficiently during a regular maintenance appointment by one of our local experts.

Once in place, the modem will communicate information from your trailers to the dashboards of central computers at your headquarters typically via GPRS or, for some clients, via satellite. The modem contains a special type of SIM, which is welded into it and is extremely robust. It is able to withstand all types of shocks and vibrations and weather conditions that a trailer might be subject to, from desert storms to rain and snow.

The modem is powered by a special high performance battery which is recharged automatically when the trailer is on the move. When the trailer is stationary, battery-generated power continues to enable the modem to send and receive data. The battery can function without recharging for up to three months.

Ease of integration and future proofing

Among the many advantages of the Trailermatics trailer telematics solution are its ease of integration with your existing IT systems and its future-proofing. For example, for fleet managers seeking full trailers on all return journeys, Trailermatics can be integrated with freight brokers’ IT systems to capture real-time collection and delivery opportunities. Some may be interested in obtaining information with which to brief their drivers of platooning opportunities. Others may be keen to add new features and functionality to their Trailermatics solution.

Optional features

The basic Trailermatics trailer telematics solution keeps you informed of the locations of your trailers at all times. However, there are optional features that are worth investigating whether you want the trailer to give you further reassurance about security, the safety of your cargo, temperature or fuel savings.

EBS cable monitoring

If the EBS cable is not attached then Trailermatics will send the fleet manager an alert. The EBS system can also indicate whether the trailer is loaded or not and if “yes,” the weight.

Cargo safety

You can maximise the safety of your high value cargo by monitoring the locking and unlocking of the trailer doors. You can set Trailermatics remotely to trigger an alarm if the doors are opened at an unexpected time or at an hour which differs from the delivery schedule. For this feature, the Trailermatics team installs electronic locks and attach special sensors to the doors.

Another cargo safety option is Truck ID which identifies whether or not your trailers are being taken by the right truck.

Temperature

You may be running reefers and want reassurance via remote monitoring that the refrigeration temperatures in your trailers are appropriate for the pharmaceuticals, food, drink and other temperature-sensitive goods that you are transporting. You will receive instant alerts on any abnormal temperatures and be in a position to take immediate action. Not only can Trailermatics install sensors for this but it can also share the expertise of its two major transport refrigeration manufacturers to ensure that the correct data is being drawn from the best cooling systems.

Fuel savings

Incorrectly inflated tires can contribute to poor fuel consumption. Trailermatics’ Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) tells you whether or not your tires are pumped up to the right pressures for your loads and when your tyres need replacing. The right tyre pressures are also critical to driver safety and trailer road-handling. We have calculated that the TPMS feature can save you up to €900 per trailer per year.

Add Trailermatics telematics to your trailers

Why not contact your local Trailermatics area manager to find out more about how you and your trailer fleet can benefit from 24/7 remote trailer tracking, increased peace of mind and cost savings by installing the Trailermatics trailer telematics solution?

Trailers on the road? Improve your business performance

The economic environment in Europe in the short to medium term would appear to be favourable for the European haulage industry. Road transport companies should take advantage of opportunities to improve their business performance. In parallel, they should keep an eye on the bottom line, maximising margins through sensible cost control and benefiting from telematics to help them achieve this.

Economic growth, new opportunities

In April 2017, the European Union (EU) in its Spring 2017 Economic Forecast predicted “steady growth ahead”. It expected GDP growth in the whole EU to remain constant at 1.9% in both 2017 and 2018. The UK’s Freight Transport Association’s Logistics Report 2016 estimated that by 2020, 17.1% of all UK retail sales will be online, up from 13.8% in 2015, an example of a growing marketing that offers additional opportunities for entrepreneurial transporters.

Profit margins

In the same report, the FTA highlighted the reported profit margin of the top 100 UK road hauliers. In the latest statistics, it found that profit margin was at 4% in 2015, up from 3% in both 2013 and 2014. It will be interesting to discover how profit margins evolved in 2016 and understand how these compare to margins for transporters in other European countries.

Optimise your trailer fleet with Trailermatics

The economy is on the rise and consumers have restored faith in their personal income. A survey by analytics firm comScore in June 2016, learned that in Europe 65% of internet users have shopped online and, for the first time, this year has seen over 50% of goods purchased online in the US. Naturally, this has led to an increasing demand for transportation and therefore the need for more trailer fleet flexibility. The game play in distribution  is to deliver the cargo as fast as you can. For the best price and with maximum security to make sure that the transport is safe, and the cargo is properly secured to avoid cargo theft. The competition is fierce, and margins are small so you need to increase your operational profit and optimize your fleet management. With Trailermatics you have the most complete tool for your trailer fleet. Optimise your assets with these telematics services.

Protect by monitoring attempts for cargo theft

Trailermatics alerts instantly all assets in your trailer fleet. If the driver is not able to respond, we can activate local police forces through Eurowatch to help you to secure the cargo and your trailer. Having this advanced telematics technology embedded in your fleet management brings added value to your competitive resume. Customers want to do business with the company that complies to the latest safety and security rules. Transport is all about time traveling; as long as you get a strong performance on your ETA (Estimated Time of Arrival) everybody is happy. But what if your cargo gets stolen? The statistics are still rising, and often cargo gets stolen while the driver is having a rest. Or a proper meal in a road restaurant. With secured locks and door sensors on your trailer, you will make it difficult to get inside the trailer. But if they do with brutal force or laser cutters, you can receive an immediate alert on your and your driver’s mobile phone.

Know your idle trailer time

Imagine you can locate all your trailers on one computer screen. Trailermatics customers do this every day! If you can maximize your trailer utilization (trailer-km per year), it will strongly affect the balance between fixed and variable costs and gives an important overall indication of efficiency. Optimise your logistics activities with trailer telematics, an investment in your trailer fleet with a very high ROI (Return on Investment). For any cargo demand from your customer, you simply point the driver where to pick up a suitable trailer closest to the cargo.

Save money on tires

Times are expensive so it’s an easy win to make sure they last as long as possible. To keep tires in a perfect condition you need to check the tire pressure. If your trailer has the wrong tire pressure, your transport can consume up to 5% more fuel. And if the tires are 20% below, the tire life is reduced by 30%. You can trust your drivers to check the tire pressure, but you can help them with an TPMS alert if the pressure is wrong. If you connect your trailers with Trailermatics, the time of usage and the traveled distance, you can schedule your trailer tire management before it’s too late.

EBS alert and bogie load

An overloaded trailer might be good idea on paper for your profit, but in reality it is dangerous. Your driver will face trouble to control the trailer truck combination, and in case of an emergency break, the trailer will not respond normal. To avoid this, you can receive an alert from Trailermatics when the trailer loads exceed the maximum weight. At the same time, the working of the EBS, the electronic brake system is checked, for maximum security.

Where to start with telematics for trailers

If you are thinking to upgrade your company and increase your profit, come and talk to the Trailermatics crew. They all come from trailer operations and know what it is like to manage a fleet of trailers. They will show you how you can follow your trailer and read the data that is sent to you. We train your staff, so they get all the benefits from the system. Meanwhile we help you to set-up a schedule to install the DG 200 terminal on your trailers. The DG-200 is the hardware unit connected to the EBS. Now you are ready to power up and choose from different packages for enabling fleet management, cold chain monitoring, security enhancement, carrier management, tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS), and truck id.

Choose for the best trailer fleet solution

Empower your trailer with space technology and expertise

Choosing a telematics for trailers solution is not that complicated. Of course, there are many suppliers that offer to help you track your trailer and most services will not differ a lot. So how can you make good choice for your trailer fleet? First of all, ask for the list of clients that use the provider on your short-list. If these are large players in the transport and logistic field, you know that these companies have done their home-work before making a solid choice.

Make then a tick-box if the telematics system is modular. After all, you want to be flexible with extra options and be able to upscale your fleet. Ultimately, look who’s behind the telematics supplier. If a trailer supplier offers telematics, you know they have to buy in a certain telematics expertise. With Trailermatics by Novacom Services, you know that inside Novacom we have all the expertise needed for a perfect GPS tracking solution and location of your trailer or tanker.

Expertise from space

We have some remarkable expertise in our team from CNES. This Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales is the government agency responsible for France’s space policy in Europe. CNES is inventing space systems of the future and is France’s connection with the final frontier. CNES works together with IFREMER, the French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea. And long before GPS ever started and Google Earth came online, CNES and IFREMER created CLS (Collecte Localisation Satellites), the worldwide operator of the Argos satellite system.

Argos started in the last century as the first global tracking system. Today, it is still used to locate small satellite transmitters throughout the world, handling the tracking of animals, drifting buoys and flotillas of fishing boats. CLS and CNES created in 2002 Novacom Services  to develop new telematics services built on the technological revolution brought by GPS, the Internet and GSM networks . The ultimate way to share 25 years of expertise in geolocation and to propose a new range of services based on the concept of the Novacom platform; a state of the art computer centre that allows customers to access their own data 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Connect with earth

Trailermatics can collect and merge information from any other connectable device (like most of the reefers engines). With Trailermatics from Novacom, you have the ideal platform to oversee and manage all data to or from other telematics providers. That makes us also the perfect partner to integrate trailer telematics with existing truck telematics. At Novacom, we think about solutions to keep you going! Novacom Trailermatics was awarded in 2011 and 2015 with the prestigious Frost & Sullivan ‘Customer Value Leadership Award’ for the European connected trailer industry.

You can only be a market leader in trailer telematics if you have strong partners. With Trailermatics, we offer a telematics ‘one-stop-service’ in multiple geographies and our solution to be used for different asset types and/or short-term rented equipment. Transport companies should also be able to upgrade easily to one of our many specialized solutions without further investment in technology.

Three reasons for Central & Eastern Europe to bond with Trailermatics

Central & Eastern Europe is booming. Forecasts for most of the region’s economies are up. The numbers of commercial vehicles continue to grow as does the demand for truck and trailer telematics. These three reasons have led Trailermatics telematics solutions to be adopted by fleet managers in record-breaking numbers in Central & Eastern Europe (“CEE”), replicating Trailermatics’ Western European market-leading position.

Trailermatics reason 1: Economies on the up

CEE countries include Albania, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, the Slovak Republic, Slovenia and the three Baltic States: Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The economies of Central & Eastern Europe are expected to continue to prosper.
Leading economic forecaster Focus Economics predicted in February 2017 that GDP growth for CEE would reach 3.1% this year, after growth of 2.9% in 2016. This rise is fuelled by “a rebound in investment and a still-strong private consumption”. Next year, growth is expected to stay constant with another 3.1% increase. In terms of individual countries, the fastest-growing economy this year in the CEE is forecast to be Romania with 3.8% growth, ahead of Bulgaria, Poland and Slovakia expanding at 3.1% each.

Trailermatics reason 2: Commercial vehicle fleet growth

The commercial transport industry in the CEE has also enjoyed significant growth. This has been partly spurred by governments investing in the CEE road infrastructure which links major industrial areas across the region including those of countries bordering the CEE such as Russia and Greece. This investment originated following an initiative established by the Pan European Transport Conference, Crete, in 1994. The result is the establishment of a web of ten pan-European transport corridors that weave across CEE, stretching from St Petersburg in the North to Igoumenitsa in the South and from Nuremburg in the West to Odessa in the East. This has led to a dynamic growth in commercial vehicle fleets with a total of just over 10 million commercial vehicles now on the road, according to a 2015 report by analyst firm Ergo Institute.

Trailermatics reason 3: Telematics fast becoming the norm

The adoption of truck and trailer telematics is increasingly becoming best practice. The Ergo Institute reported that one million commercial vehicles in CEE had already been equipped with telematics solutions by April 2014, a figure which represented 9.6% of all commercial vehicles in the region. The analysts expect the installation rate of telematics in commercial vehicles to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 25 percent. This will lead to 3.05 million vehicles being equipped with telematics in 2019.

Trailermatics telematics, the market leader in CEE
Trailermatics is the market leader in trailer telematics in the CEE as well as in Western Europe. Trailermatics telematics adds value by giving fleet managers access to a wide range of data about their fleets in real time as well as the information required to take business-critical decisions from wherever they are, be they in CEE, Western Europe or the Maghreb. Trailermatics telematics covers many areas including driver and trailer scheduling, finding the most effective delivery routes, asset tracking, monitoring wear and tear on mechanical components and remote control of functions such as reefer temperatures or tyre pressures.

From Marseille to Marrakech; telematics keeps an eye on your trailer

The Maghreb countries of Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia together form an attractive market with a total population of 81 million people. A majority of the region’s trade is with the European Union so there are significant opportunities for commercial vehicle fleets to trade between the EU and Maghreb. This factor underlies the particularly strong flow of commercial freight traffic between European countries such as France and Spain and the Maghreb.

60% of Maghreb trade with the EU

The countries of the Maghreb conduct more than 60% of their total trade with the European Union (EU)* but relatively little between themselves. There are two interesting consequences of this situation. One is that trailers tend to cross the Mediterranean by ship, are unloaded at the numerous ports along the shores of North Africa and then brought to their final destinations by local transport operators. Another is that, with less freight volume between countries, there are fewer international trailers in circulation. The relative scarcity of international trailers makes each trailer more visible as a potential target for criminals than they might in geographies such as Europe where trucks and trailers cross borders in greater numbers and are a more normal daily sight.

Trailer and cargo safety

Given the volatility of current economic and political situations across all countries these days, it is sensible to constantly monitor your valuable trailers and their cargos. Fleet managers operating in the countries of the Maghreb are no exception to this rule.

The cost of theft in the Maghreb

A 2010 survey of the global risks of cargo theft by FreightWatch International rated the Maghreb at similar risk levels to Southern and Eastern Europe. It found that the most commonly targeted product types in Africa included food and drinks, electronics and building and industrial materials. A 2016 report by BSI Supply Chain Services and Solutions, estimated that $23 billion was lost due to cargo theft worldwide in 2015 from a variety of supply chain threats, predominantly driven by security concerns. So it is clear that cargo theft will continue to be an issue and fleet managers should manage the risks by taking appropriate security measures.

What can the trailer fleet managers do about cargo theft?

There are several measures that trailer fleet managers can take:

  • Screen current and prospective employees and transport partners.
  • Create a security culture within their company with security training for fleet managers and drivers.
  • Factor in security when planning delivery routes such as including stops at secured parking and travelling on alternative routes.
  • Organise a regular trailer maintenance and repair programme to ensure that all trailers are in peak condition, thereby minimising the risk of unexpected roadside breakdown and repair.
  • Use technology and the latest trailer telematics. Truck, trailer and cargo tracking, vehicle immobilization and advanced, high-technology security locks are readily available.

Trailermatics and its anti-trailer-theft technology

Whether your trailers are travelling from Marseilles, Barcelona or Genoa to Algiers, Marrakech or Tunis and back, Trailermatics’ sophisticated trailer telematics solution can provide the latest anti-trailer-theft technology. By deploying GPS and satellite-linked geo-fencing technology, trailer fleet managers can monitor the whereabouts of trailers at all times across the Maghreb and Europe.

Part of the range of theft prevention measures offered by Trailermatics are locks and sensors that trigger alarms when trailer doors are opened or goods are moved in unscheduled ways. If the trailer travels in an unscheduled way, an email or SMS alert is sent to base. This data, combined with constant trailer location tracking information, enables the fleet manager to take appropriate recovery action if trailer or cargo theft is suspected.

The multiple-award winning GPS Trailermatics solution can be installed on any brand or type of trailer. Plus our software can integrated with your existing software. Novacom Trailermatics was awarded in 2011 and 2015 with the prestigious Frost & Sullivan ‘Customer Value Leadership Award’ for the European connected trailer industry. Telematics are a must for your trailer

As a fleet manager endeavouring “to keep up with the Joneses,” your rivals in the commercial transport world, you are likely to have purchased or considered purchasing telematics technology for your trailer fleet.

Telematics: fast-growing adoption

Growth predictions in the telematics/fleet management systems market suggest that many fleet managers will invest in telematics over the next few years. In 2016 research consultancy Berg Insight predicted that the number of fleet management systems in active use in Europe would grow at a compound annual growth rate of 14.9% from 5.3 million units in 2015 to 10.6 million by 2020. It expected the adoption of telematics by non-privately owned commercial vehicles to increase from 18.1% to 34.4% in 2020. In January 2017, another research firm, ABI Research predicted that global commercial telematics subscribers will reach 59 million by 2021 with fleet management penetration expected to rise sharply over the next five years, particularly in Eastern Europe and Asia Pacific, with a compound annual growth rate of over 11%.

Adding value through Trailermatics telematics

Trailermatics telematics adds value by giving fleet managers access to a wide range of data about their fleets in real time and giving them the information required to take business-critical decisions from wherever they are. Trailer telematics covers many areas including driver and trailer scheduling, finding the most effective delivery routes, asset tracking, monitoring wear and tear on mechanical components and remote control of functions such as reefer temperatures or tyre pressures.

Increase productivity

Telematics helps fleet managers increase their productivity by providing them with the best information to manage their trailer fleets as efficiently as possible. Telematics also helps fleet managers participate in the digital freight brokerage revolution by connecting to brokers’ systems. This makes it possible to have fully-loaded trailers on each leg of every journey. The Stobart Group, a UK haulier with a fleet of 2,500 trucks told the Financial Times in April 2016 that “Far fewer truck journeys are now made empty, which would have not have been possible before telematics because of a lack of data.”

Pro-active maintenance and repair

Telematics management dashboard permit fleet managers to proactively manage the maintenance and repair of their trailers remotely. A Trailermatics system can inform you when your trailers require servicing and which parts, such as shock absorbers or brake pads, need replacing. Armed with this information, the fleet manager can schedule workshop appointments to minimise trailer downtime whilst avoiding unexpected repairs and costs.

Increase trailer fleet and cargo security

Trailer fleet security and cargo theft are becoming increasingly problematic. A 2016 report, BSI Supply Chain Services and Solutions, estimated that $23 billion was lost due to cargo theft worldwide in 2015 from a variety of supply chain threats, predominantly driven by security concerns. Incidents range from cargo being stolen at warehouses whilst loading or opportunistic theft from stationary trailers through to the hijacking of fully laden trailers by sophisticated criminal gangs.

Trailer telematics tell a fleet manager where his or her trailers are at any time, whether or not a deviation from the agreed route is a sign of breached security and ultimately whether further action needs to be taken. Trailermatics telematics technology can include the reading of tracking devices on trailers and cargo; the deployment of vehicle immobilisation measures and the monitoring and activation of high-tech security locks on the vehicle.

Save money with our Tire Press Monitor System on your trailers

Tires play a significant role in the lives of your trailers. Managing your tires smartly can generate substantial fuel economy and other cost savings for your fleet. Moreover, monitoring your trailer tires can now be done remotely thanks to Trailermatics’s Tire Pressure Monitor System.

Influences on fleet fuel economy

There are several factors that can influence fleet fuel economy including:

  • Vehicle, engine and accessory design and maintenance. A vehicle’s aerodynamics and its travelling speed have a large effect. Aerodynamic drag increases exponentially with the speed of the vehicle. Fuel economy decreases by 5% for every 4.5 tonnes added. Misaligned wheels on your truck and trailer can also increase the total drag and fuel consumption.
  • Driving style. An aggressive driving style can eliminate any benefits from investments in fuel-efficient tires, engines, aerodynamic devices or synthetic lubricants. Telematics can measure fuel consumption over specific distances and fleet managers can provide incentives to reward fuel-efficient drivers.
  • Environmental conditions. The weather, road surfaces and terrain have a direct effect on fuel consumption but are factors that are impossible to control.
  • Tire selection and maintenance. As each tire rolls along a road, it forms a drag force due to the energy loss created by the deflection of the tire sidewall and the compression and deformation of the tire tread over the road surface. This drag force is called rolling resistance. Improving tire tread, tread compound, design and/or depth can generate significant fuel efficiency. Low rolling resistance tires offer the best fuel economy. Underinflated tires dramatically reduce fuel economy so Goodyear recommends keeping tires fully inflated to maximise tire strength.

Trailermatics’ Tire Pressure Monitor System

Fortunately Trailermatic’s Tire Pressure Monitor System (“TPMS”) is available to monitor tire pressures. A rim fitted sensor measures the tire pressure, temperature and position. TPMS is capable of monitoring up to 12 wheel units and can be combined with EBS CANbus data. TPMS can be fitted to any brand and type of trailer and tire.

Tire monitoring under fleet manager and driver control

With TPMS, both the fleet manager and driver have access to tire information. This enables the driver to schedule the most efficient time to take the trailer off the road to re-inflate the tires. It also permits the fleet manager to monitor tire status and intervene if necessary. Live tire status information is a crucial asset to help fleet managers and drivers avoid road accidents caused by punctures or under-inflated tires, which can be dangerous, affect delivery timings and damage the transporter’s reputation.

Cost-saving through TPMS proactive management of tires

Proactively managing tires through TPMS is significantly less expensive than dealing with an unexpected tire change which requires roadside assistance and, in the worst circumstances, the possible transfer of a load onto other trailers. The typical cost saving per vehicle per year with TPMS installed is €900. Interested in the calculation for your transport company? Contact us via novacom@trailermatics.com

If C.W McCall had written the famous country and western song “Convoy” about trucking in 2017 rather than in 1975, he might have called it “Platoon” instead. A “platoon” of trucks is a convoy of semi-autonomous trucks linked by smart technology. The concept has prompted government and industry initiatives to turn it into standard practice. Truck platooning holds great promise. Today’s technology including telematics make platooning technically possible but there are obstacles to be overcome.

What is “platooning”?

Sometimes referred to by an acronym DATP (“driver assistive truck platooning”), truck platooning is convoy of a number of semi-autonomous trucks equipped with state-of-the-art driving support systems, all closely following one another. Each truck is connected to the others by a wireless communications system. Data is collected through 100s of sensors fitted onto the vehicles. When the first truck in the convoy brakes, the second one does so instantaneously. If a car looks like it will merge in front of the truck, the truck’s sensors and system will recognise this and adjust the distance between it and the next truck to let the car in. Each cab is manned by a driver, whose role is to manage the system and then, once the truck has split from the platoon, to drive the cargo to its delivery destination.

Platooning benefits

Platooning delivers many benefits including:

  • Fuel saving and a consequent reduction in C02 emissions. With trucks driving 15m behind each other rather than 50m, there is a significant reduction in aerodynamic drag. Fuel saving is estimated at 10%.
  • Road safety. Braking reaction along the platoon is immediate.
  • Improved traffic flow. Platooning boosts traffic flow and reduces tailbacks.
  • The creation of new jobs and opportunities for further improvement in the logistics supply chain.

Existing technology repurposed

Platooning technology already exists. Current technologies have been repurposed and integrated to ensure the safety and efficiency of the platooning platform. This includes “advanced adaptive cruise control” which is used in cars to set the engine at a specific speed. For platooning, cruise control keeps the truck at a specific distance from the one in front of it.

Sensors relaying valuable vehicle and fleet management data from trucks and trailers to IT systems at an operator’s base, fundamental to telematics, are integral to platooning technology. Other examples of repurposing today’s technology include the “Autonomous Emergency Braking” systems which over-ride the driver’s controls when it senses a possible accident.

Issues to be addressed

These include:

  • The harmonisation of legislation between EU member states
  • The environmental impact
  • Co-ordination of telecommunications
  • Liability issues
  • The fitness for purpose of existing road infrastructures
  • Systems that will add trucks from different transport operators to platoons that are sharing the same routes

International political encouragement

Recognising the strong contribution of the European logistics industry to the economy, including the opportunities presented by truck platooning, the Dutch EU Presidency in 2016 initiated discussions entitled the European Truck Platooning Challenge. The aim is to address platooning issues in conjunction with other member states and representatives of the European transport including the major truck manufacturers. A highlight of this initiative was the European Truck Platooning Challenge in which truck platoons drove successfully to Rotterdam from various cities across Europe.

The future

In a recent article, Rolf Lockwood, journalist at TruckInfo.com believes that we will see truck platooning in action in five to ten years’ time. Whilst truck platooning is at too early a stage to be a normal sight on European roads or for C.W McCall to have a hit song with “Platoon”, trailer fleet managers should familiarise themselves with the latest telematics technologies to be ready for a truck platooning future.

Cargo theft trends 2017 and how to handle them

The increasing flow of cargo theft news suggests that this crime will rise in 2017. What can trailer fleet managers do to safeguard their fleets?

The cost of theft in Europe

A 2016 report, BSI Supply Chain Services and Solutions, estimated that $23 billion was lost due to cargo theft worldwide in 2015 from a variety of supply chain threats, predominantly driven by security concerns. Along with Brazil and Venezuela, BSI identified Germany as a new hotspot for cargo theft with a significantly increased number of thefts. Several Länder including Baden Württemberg, Bavaria, Brandenburg, Hesse and Lower Saxony were singled out as areas where “slash-and-grab” thefts had increased and full-load thefts increased in North Rhine-Westphalia. Some regions saw spikes in both types of incidents. In 2016, German authorities brought two organised crime groups who had carried out cargo theft crimes for several years to justice.

Germany is not the only European country facing rising trailer crime rates. Security intelligence company FreightWatch International disclosed that 443 incidents were reported to it in Q3 2015, with the most occurring in Germany but closely followed by the UK and Belgium.

Typical types of cargo theft

Criminals have three preferred ways of stealing cargo. The first is opportunistic breaking into soft-sided trailers during overnight parking. Such trailers offer limited cargo protection from determined thieves and the risk increases if the trailer parks overnight in unsecured public carparks. The second method is hijacking. This is typically the preserve of highly sophisticated gangs who ambush the truck and force the driver to travel to a hidden location where they load the cargo onto their own transport. Thirdly, theft can occur directly before loading at the warehouses.

What can the trailer fleet manager do about cargo theft?

There are several measures that the trailer fleet manager can take:

  1. Screen current and prospective employees and transport partners. Security experts believe that many cargo thefts are executed with the help of inside information.
  2. Create a security culture within their company. Provide security training for employees and educate truck drivers in hijack awareness and prevention.
  3. Factor in security when determining logistics. Vary the delivery routes. Schedule overnight stops in secured parking areas where possible. Assign security guards to monitor valuable cargo at warehouses and distribution centres or to accompany drivers.
  4. Use technology and the latest trailer telematics. Truck, trailer and cargo tracking, vehicle immobilization and advanced, high-technology security locks are readily available.

Trailermatics and its anti-trailer-theft technology

Trailermatics’ sophisticated trailer telematics solution provides the latest anti-trailer-theft technology. Deploying GPS and satellite-linked geo-fencing technology, the trailer fleet manager can monitor the whereabouts of trailers at all times. An alert is issued if a trailer veers off the pre-selected route, so the fleet manager can suggest an alternative route or take action if the trailer has been stolen.

Part of the range of theft prevention measures offered by Trailermatics is a Truck ID which identifies that the right truck is towing the right trailer. Trailermatics can also provide locks and sensors that trigger alarms when trailer doors are opened or goods are moved in unscheduled ways. Trailer fleet managers can pre-programme trailer doors to only open in specific locations at specific times. If the trailer travels in an unscheduled way, an email or SMS alert is sent to base. This data, combined with constant trailer location tracking information, enables the fleet manager to take appropriate recovery action if trailer or cargo theft is suspected.
